Hodak, John Andrew M.D.
The Guest Book is expired.
John, age 77, of Phoenix, AZ passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer and amyloidosis. He was a doctor, a cook, a gentleman, a friend, and even a magician, but he will mostly be remembered as a husband, a father and a grandfather. He grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He completed his residency in radiology at the University of Minnesota, where he met Nancy, his wife of 48 years. In 1969, they moved to Phoenix, where John began a thirty-year career at Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI). Throughout his career, John played an important role in the growth of BNI's Neuroradiology division. He was an expert in the diagnosis of neurological diseases and taught his craft to nearly 100 neuroradiologists, many now leaders in their field. They remember his patience and good humor, his stern insistence on excellence and will not soon forget the impact he made on their lives. In his personal life, John found solace in books, classical music, cooking, and gardening. John's love of gardening was evident from the seeds he sowed and so carefully nurtured into bonsai, flowers, herbs, and vegetables. He passed on many of these loves to his children who will continue to tend his garden and cook meals from his handwritten recipe book. A lifelong student and scientist at heart, John often shared his passion for learning with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed trips to his beloved cabin in Prescott where he gazed at the stars and listened to his short-wave radio. He had a quick wit and his jokes were silly. He taught, by example, the spirit of generosity, acceptance, optimism, hope, laughter, and love of family. An inspiration in life and during illness, he will be painfully and grievously missed. As he said to his wife during his battle, "I've had a good life." That you did Dad, you are loved beyond measure. John is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy; daughters Lisa (Jay) and Linda McGeough (Mike); son Bill (Jessica); grandchildren Tanner, Lily, Delia and Will; sister Jean and brother Bill. Expressions of sympathy may be made in John's memory to Barrow Neuroradiology, 350 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85013 (602-406-3041) or Boyce Thompson Arboretum, 37615 E.
