Johnson, Josephine "Jo" Hared
80, of Tempe, AZ died on June 16, 2013. Jo was born in Petersburg, North Dakota. After living in Juneau, Alaska, Jo moved to Phoenix at age 15. In 1950, Jo graduated from West High and attended Phoenix College. Jo received her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Arizona State University. After moving to Minnesota and California (and except for a brief stop in Montana), Jo returned to Arizona living the remainder of her life in Tempe. Jo wrote her dissertation while working full time and raising six children. Jo spent over 25 years teaching early childhood education courses at colleges and universities. Jo was always active in her community. Jo gave freely of her time to local government, charitable boards and her church. At the end of her educational career, Jo pursued one of her many passions, travel. Jo worked in the travel industry which enabled her to see the world. In 1992, Jo retired and volunteered her time to many facets of the arts. Playing tennis, bridge, listening to classical music, jazz, playing the organ, attending theatre and good conversation with friends or family always made Jo happy. Jo was extremely proud of her Norwegian heritage. Jo is survived by two sisters, Agnes Coons and Kathy Burgoz, her six children, Laura Lasko, Eric Johnson, Craig Johnson, Lisa Johnson Stone, Roger "Tony" Johnson, Stephen Johnson and her five grandchildren Kendall Walker, Alexa Johnson, Bryce Johnson, Savanna Johnson and Jenna Johnson. A public memorial service will be July 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., University Lutheran Church, 340 East 15th Street, Tempe, Arizona, 85281.
