Sunkett, Dr. Mark Ellis
Dr. Mark Ellis Sunkett, born April 19, 1949 in Philadelphia, PA. passed away June 26th, 2014 in Mesa, AZ. He was 65 years old. Mark was a professor at Arizona State University, a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music and Temple University both in Philadelphia. Dr. Sunkett also held a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh. He performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, was a member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, and was principal tympanist with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. As an ethnomusicologist, his research regularly took him to Senegal, West Africa, resulting in the formation of an African Dance Troupe, and the publication of: books, articles, disks, and videotapes. Dr. Sunkett is survived by his wife Phyllis Batchler-Sunkett and brother Warren Sunkett Jr. (Althea), along with numerous nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Warren Sunkett, Louise (Logan) Sunkett, and sister Yvonne (Sunkett) Barnes. His enormous personality, wealth of selflessness and friendly smile will be sorely missed by friends, colleagues, and family. Services will be held in Philadelphia at Ivy Hill Cemetery 1201 Easton Road, on Saturday, July 19 at 10:00 am in the Small Chapel. A memorial service will be held at Arizona State University at a future date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to , 6063 E. Arbor Ave. Bldg 3, Mesa, AZ 85206.
