Robert Dorsey Rutherford, 94, passed away peacefully March 21st in the company of his brother Jim and son Bob. He was predeceased by Margo, his wife of 64 years, in July. Bob was a career army officer, serving in the pacific during WW II and then a succession of worldwide artillery and air defense assignments before retiring at Luke AFB in 1968 as a Lt. Colonel. Bob was born to Col. D.J. Rutherford, himself a career military officer, and Cordelia Smith Rutherford in 1919 in Los Angeles. The mobile and international lifestyle of his father's career formed an exciting landscape in his youth and featured periods in both the Philippines and Panama. He attended the University of Washington for three years but left short of graduation to accept a commission in the Washington National Guard in 1940 and deployed to Buna and Port Moresby, New Guinea in early 1942. After the war he remained in active service and accepted a regular Army commission. In 1947, Bob met a beautiful and bright civilian medical technician who was stationed at Beaumont Army Medical Hospital in El Paso Texas where Bob was stationed at Ft. Bliss. They were married in 1948. Margo was his life's companion and one true love. After retiring from the Army, Bob completed his degree at ASU. He was active in a variety of veteran's organizations including MOAA, MOWW, and CAMP and was a long time parishioner at All Saints Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry for several years. He enjoyed shooting competitively and was a well decorated senior Olympian spanning three decades. Bob was a hero and role model for his family and will forever live in our hearts. In addition to his brother Jim and son Bob (Ann), he is survived by his granddaughter Madison and five nieces and nephews. In addition to Margo he was preceded in death by his brother Drew (Kay). A celebration of Bob's life will be held 1:30 pm Saturday March 30th at All Saints, 6300 N. Central. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the AZ Humane Society, 1521 W. Dobbins Road, Phoenix, 85021; www.azhumane.org.
