Thomas "Tom" Carl Uithoven, 81, of El Mirage, AZ, died Saturday, April 7, 2012 at his home. Tom was born June 19, 1930 in Detroit, MI to Christian and Geraldine Uithoven. He grew up in West Allis, WI and on a farm in Dousman, WI. Tom met and married the love of his life, Marilyn Lubahn, in 1954 in Milwaukee. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, completing a specialized program for medical photography and illustration. He worked as a multi media specialist in Milwaukee at St. Francis Hospital and at Deaconess Hospital, where he pioneered the filming of open heart surgery. Tom relocated his family to Phoenix, AZ in 1965 where he provided specialized medical illustration and photography services to hospitals, physicians and lawyers. He was a member of the Biological Photographic Association (BPA), earning a Fellowship in 1978. He also founded Arizona Medical Media, training disabled veterans in medical media production, and was an adjunct professor with the College of Architecture at Arizona State University. He retired in 1982 due to medical disability. Tom was a model railroad enthusiast, an avid collector of transportation toys, a lover of all things Disney, and in later years enjoyed building Lego models. He loved symphony music, was a former season ticketholder for ASU Football, and an avid Arizona Diamondbacks fan who was instrumental in achieving wheelchair accessibility for disabled fans at Chase Field. His civic involvement included working on disability access issues with the City of Phoenix, the City of Glendale and the State of Arizona. One of his most rewarding projects was leading the effort to raise $50,000 in 1976 to take the Moon Valley High School marching band to Philadelphia for the Bicentennial Parade and Celebration. He also was a Third Degree Mason. Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn; daughters Christine Uithoven and husband, Michael Roane of Kansas City, MO; Sandra Buttine and husband, Christopher of Dallas, TX; Barbara Lindsay and husband, Russell of Denver, CO; son, Thomas of Chandler, AZ; five grandchildren, Tom Buttine, Sara Buttine, Daniel Tripp, Alexander Uithoven, Kyle Uithoven; step-grandson Jared Roane; and brother Donald Uithoven and wife, Glenda of El Cajon, CA. He is also survived by nephews, Criss Uithoven, Robert Uithoven, Michael Watkins, and Russell Watkins; and cousins Sally (Bill) Pekel and Judy (Garry) Antler. He was preceded in death by his parents. Tom loved his Lord as Savior, his wife, children and grandchildren very much. He will be greatly and sadly missed, but lovingly remembered by family and many, many friends. A celebration of Tom's life will be held Saturday, May 5 at 2pm at First Presbyterian Church of Sun City, 12225 N. 103 Ave., Sun City, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to , First Presbyterian Church of Sun City, or MDA.
