Thompson, Walter L. III
70 of Cave Creek, AZ passed away peacefully on July 2, 2013 at the Sherman Home Hospice at Mayo Clinic Hospital. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Jr. and Velora, and his sister, Beverly. He is survived by Ella, his loving wife of 27 years, his brother Gregory, his children Vincent (wife Jennifer), Andréa, Walter IV, Alfred (wife Karen), and Scherer (husband Jermaine), and by his grandchildren, Max, Maya, Miles, Alfred III, McCoy and Dyon. Walter was born in Brooklyn, New York where he graduated from Brooklyn Technical H.S. and Ft. Greene Evening H.S. before receiving a B.A. in Economics from North Carolina A&T University in 1965. For most of his career, he worked for IBM Corp., from which he retired in 1998. He earned a Masters in Business Administration from Arizona State University the same year, after which he returned to work for ASU before retiring in 2007. Deeply engaged with his community, Walter helped found Desert Mission United Methodist Church and was active in Rotary as well as several other service organizations. A faithful local sports fan, Walter had season tickets for Arizona Cardinals football and was a charter season ticket holder for Arizona Diamondbacks baseball. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Desert Mission United Methodist Church in Scottsdale. Cremation and burial arrangements will be held ahead of time and entrusted to Messinger Mortuary. The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to Sherman House (602-530-6992).
