St. Simon's Island, GA - Walter Henry Detlefs of St. Simon's Island, Georgia, age 93, died February 22, 2014 at Hospice Atlanta. He was the loving husband of the deceased Theresa (Flynn) for 44 years with whom he raised four children until her death from Alzheimer's. At age 80, Walter married Connie Lee of St. Simon's Island whom he was married to for 14 years and together they resided on St. Simon's Island, Georgia, Aiken, South Carolina and Stone Mountain, Georgia. He was the cherished brother of the late Harold John Detlefs of Williamsburg, VA.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from New York University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and later received a Masters in Management from the Stevens Institute of Techno-logy. He and his wife Terry worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. While working on the Manhattan Project, he was instrumental in establishing the process to separate uranium 235 isotopes, which resulted in weapons grade uranium. He spent most of his career in various executive management roles with Union Carbide Corporation.
He loved the beach on St. Simon's Island and his beach house in Beach Haven, N.J. He loved college Basketball, history, particularly the Civil War, and golf, which he played until he was 90 years old. He treasured spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Connie and his children Rick of Atlanta, Jeff of Evergreen, Colorado, Suzie Turner of Whitehouse Station N.J. and Lisa Ryan of River Forest, IL. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mary Flynn Niemitz, Tori Detlefs, Alex Detlefs, Jackson Detlefs, Ann Ryan, Henry Ryan and Billy Ryan.
