A Graveside Service will be held at the Gridley Biggs Cemetery on Friday, September 5, 2014, 10:00 AM for Donald "Dutch" Thayer, 91. He passed away August 29, 2014 in Gridley.
Donald was born August 4, 1923 to Daniel and Marion Thayer in Yuba City, CA, where he resided until 1943 when he enlisted in the Marines.
He was very proud of serving his country. After the Marines he came home and worked various jobs until he found his calling. He became a police officer for the City of Gridley for over 20 years, retiring as sergeant. He then went to work for the Butte County Sheriff's Dept. for another 15 years.
He was a Volunteer Fireman for 35 years at the same time he was a Sergeant. He and his fellow firemen were instrumental in starting the first annual Gridley Red Suspenders Day. The event is still going strong.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Thayer; daughter RoseMarie Macfarlane; brothers Darell and Stephen Thayer; sister Louellen Rudd and one stepson Tony Panecaldo.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Dorothy (Bill) Prock of Gridley and Marsha and Jeanie Thayer of Utah; grandchildren, Jon Macfarlane, Kimberly Prock; great grandchildren, Jacob, Jessep, Ashyton, Macfarlane, Joseph Prock, all of Gridley; a brother Dan (Phyllis) Thayer of Sacramento, friend and companion Pauline Hawes.
Dr. Tom Stringfellow of the First Baptist Church in Gridley will officiate the service.
Interment will be in the Gridley Biggs Cemetery.
Arrangements are entrusted to Gridley Block Funeral Chapel.
