William Stuart DeWitt

William Stuart DeWitt of Sioux Falls, SD / Green Valley, AZ. was born March 30, 1921 in Grand Haven, MI. He passed away July 8, 2014 at age 93.

Bill will be deeply missed by his wife of 61 years, Janet; children Jeanne, Jim (Sarah), Bill (Lori); grandchildren, Kristia (Mike), Lisa (Zach), Bill (Sara), Rachel (Ryan), David, Joshua, Scott, Steven, James; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Elizabeth, Liam; and sister, Margaret (Gordon).

Bill was born on March 30, 1921, in Grand Haven, MI, the second of six children, to Dr. Stuart and Ida DeWitt. He graduated from Grand Haven High School, and went on to get his bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. He served as a doctor in the US Navy, completed his surgical residency in Rhode Island, and moved to Sioux Falls where he worked at the VA Hospital, the last years as Chief of Surgery, and was an Associate Professor of the SD Medical School.

He was a member of the American Board of Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.

It was in Sioux Falls that he met the love of his life, Janet, and they were married on November 22, 1953. Bill loved sailing, golf, tennis, jogging, and stamp collecting. He was active in his church, and strongly supported causes he believed in. Bill was known for his kindness, his dry sense of humor, his persistence, and his love for his family.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 pm Friday, July 11th, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave., Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial Service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at First Baptist Church, 1401 S. Covell Ave., Sioux Falls, SD. Luncheon will be at the church following the service. Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church, Green Lake Conference Center, or the University of Sioux Falls.
