Darwin (Marty) R Martinell, 71

A memorial celebration to honor the life of Darwin Robert Martinell will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, November 30, 2013 at the Bruce Community Room (old Methodist Church) in Bruce SD.

Darwin Robert Martinell was born January 19, 1942 to Robert and Martha (Gudmundson) Martinell at Chester, SD. He spent most of his childhood years in the Bruce area, attending country schools and graduating from Bruce High School in 1961.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1961. During his tour of duty he served on seven ships: USS Nohue, USS Henry County, USS Westchester, USS Princeton, USS Talledega, USS Kitty Hawk, USS Constellation, ; touring many countries, serving during the Vietnam War and finally training troops at the Great Lakes Naval Base at North Chicago, IL prior to his retirement in 1989.

Because Darwin was a committed serviceman, his life touched and became a part of several families. He married Bertha Kasdorf in 1964. In 1967 he married Donna Moe and a family of five girls, later having a son. In 1981 he married Glenda Ladwig and son, later adding a daughter and son to this family. After his retirement he moved Mountain Home, AR and married Mary McIntire on July 14, 1990 and daughter, adding another son to his family.

Darwin spent several of his retirement years working for his brother-in-law and nephew at Jiffy Laundry in Mountain Home, doing laundry and making deliveries. Of course during these deliveries he was able to check out a lot of the countryside and finding treasures to work on. He enjoyed old cars, tractors and lawn mowers. He would fix them up and then sell them, as they were no longer a challenge for him. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and country music at Mountain View AR and Branson, MO with family and friends. His real joy was his trips to SD. Coming home to visit family and friends and especially taking in the Bruce Honey Days celebrations.

Darwin passed away November 6, 2013 at his home near Mountain Home following an extended illness at the age of 71. A service was held at Mountain Home on Monday, November 11, 2013 with emtombment at Kirby's Tucker Memorial Mausoleum near Mountain Home. Due to Darwin's wishes there will be a memorial setup at Graceland Cemetery in Madison, SD next to his mother, father, brothers and sisters, where his heart and soul will be remembered without his remains.

Survivors include his present wife, Mary, of Mountain Home; two daughters, Linda (Mark) Witham of Haskell, AR, Mya Martinell (adopted granddaughter) of Mountain Home; three sons, Darwin Jr (Amber) of Sioux Falls, SD, Robert and Joseph of Mountain Home; six stepdaughters, Lisa Martinell, Trisha Martinell of Sioux Falls, SD; TroyLyn (Ken) Joseph of Brandon, SD; Melissa (Guy) Fish of Henry, SD; LaDonna Kinsman of Canova, SD; Sandra (Joey) VanMatre of Gassville, AR; two sisters, Joyce (Donald) Krumm of Bruce, SD; Donna Wilson of Badger, SD; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
