Harold Dean (Ike) Phelps, 87, formerly of Madison, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Avalon Rehab facility in Pullman, Wa. in the early morning of September 18, 2013.
Ike was the 3rd of 11 children born to Donald Edward and Hazel Edna Phelps. He was born in Madison and brought into the world by Dr. Daniel Sparks Baughman, father of his future wife, Nancy Jane Baughman. He attended Madison schools till leaving his Senior year of High School to join the Navy during WWII. Ike served as a Radio Operator aboard Naval aircraft along the Pacific Coast of the U.S., scanning for enemy submarines and other threats to U.S. security.
After the war, Ike resumed his studies at General Beadle College in Madison, University of Oregon, and University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he completed his first two years of Medical School. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas. After residency in Monroe, Louisiana he was a General Practitioner in Riverdale, North Dakota and Winner, South Dakota. Ike moved his family to Colorado Springs ,Colo., where he achieved his specialization in Radiology. The family settled outside of Pullman, Washington in 1966 and he resided there till his passing.
Harold was preceeded in death by his parents, his brother Ron (and sister-in-law) Monica, brothers Dale and Edward Phelps, his sister Mary Peterson, brother-in-law Jack Stanford, brother-in-law Dewey McNeil and daughter Sandra Lou Phelps.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Jane Baughman Phelps, his siblings Arlys Stanford of Madison, Dick (Janney) Phelps of Madison, Darrell (Linda) Phelps of Lake Madison, Tommy (Joan) Phelps of Sioux Falls, JoAnn McNeil of Ramona, California, Nancy (Larry) Chase of Sioux Falls and sisters-in-law Darlene Phelps of Colman, S.Dakota and Judy Sona of Pt.Charlotte, Florida. He is also survived by his daughters Nancy Caroline, Vicki and Judy and his sons Mike, Jeff and Shawn, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Final arrangements are being made by Kimball funeral home in Pullman, Wa. A memorial service will take place at the Pullman Presbyterian Church on October 19th at 2:00 PM.
