James Jewett Obituary
James D. Jewett

Tea-James D. Jewett, 68, of Tea, SD, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014 at his home after a 3 1/2 year battle with renal cancer. Jim was born August 22, 1945 in Flandreau, SD, the son of Marshall and Lovell (Schult) Jewett. He graduated from Flandreau High School in 1963. In 1965, he joined the Navy and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1968. After his service, he attended the National College of Business and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1972. While attending college Jim met his future wife, Diane Houska, whom he married on September 16, 1973 in Mitchell, SD. They traveled through Wyoming and South Dakota setting up Pioneer Grocery Stores from 1972 to 1975, moved to Sioux Falls and worked for Hy-Vee from 1975-1984. He went to work for Viking Vans in 1984. He then purchased the Tea Food Mart in 1987, which he ran for 19 years. In 2006 he started work for the Tea Area High School until 2013. Jim and Diane were married for 40 years. His pride and joy was his family--not only his two sons, but his brothers and sister, many nieces and nephews, and especially his two granddaughters. He loved the annual family 4th of July celebrations at his home in Tea. He cherished the relationships he built with his customers from the Food Mart, and "his kids" and coworkers from the school, all of whom became his dear friends. Survivors include his wife: Diane, two sons, Dusty and his wife Alyssa of Seattle, WA; and Matt and his wife Juliet and their two daughters, Nola and Sage, of Fairmont, MN. He is also survived by 3 brothers: Bob Jewett of Portland, TN; Roger and Patti Jewett of Reno, NV; Randy and Marianne Jewett of Irvine, CA; and his sister Marci Duncan (Dean Dailey) of Mankato, MN. Other survivors include numerous beloved nieces and nephews across the country. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Lovell Jewett, his sister Janet, and his brother Tom. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday, February 24, 2014 at Tea Trinity Lutheran Church with burial in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is from 3:00-5:00 pm Sunday at the church with a 5:00 pm prayer service.
