John S. Gapa

John S. Gapa, 94, of Sioux Falls died Monday, July 29, 2013 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

John was born November 7, 1918 at Detroit Michigan. He grew up in Detroit where he received his education, graduating from Chadsey High School in 1937.

On September 11, 1940 he entered military service and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He received his honorable discharge on November 1, 1945 at Patterson Field in Ohio.

He was united in marriage with Leora Petersen on February 6, 1943 in Sioux Falls, SD. Throughout their married life, the couple lived in Texas for two years before returning to South Dakota to live in Rapid City. While living in Rapid City, John attended the South Dakota School of Mines. In 1957, the couple returned to Sioux Falls.

In 1947, John began his career with the phone company and served the company faithfully until his retirement in 1983 as an engineer. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the Moose Lodge, the Elks Lodge, the Telephone Pioneers, and the American Legion. In his spare time, John enjoyed woodworking, golfing, hunting and fishing. After retiring, he and Leora loved to travel. Together, they were able to visit many different parts of the world. One of his more recent travels was on the South Dakota Honor Flight which allowed him to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. His wife predeceased him on October 24, 2011.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Rebecca A. (Robert) Hess of Sioux Falls, SD; and three grandchildren, Robert McGuire of Sioux Falls, SD, Ryan McGuire of Denver, CO, and Jonathan Gapa of Indian-apolis, IN. He is also survived by a brother, Ronald (Joan) Gapa living in Michigan. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Jon L. Gapa on October 19, 2002; his brothers, Leonard Gapa and Earl Gapa, and his sister, Eleanor Dumanski.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Turkey Valley Lutheran Cemetery, rural Irene, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 6:30 pm Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location.
