Funeral services will be10:30am, Saturday, January 25, 2014, St. Agatha Catholic Church, Howard, South Dakota with burial to follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Howard, South Dakota. Visitation will begin Friday from noon to 5pm at the Willoughby Funeral Home, Howard and resuming, 6pm at St. Agatha Church, Howard with a Prayer service at 7pm. Leo Theodore Kommes, 78, of Howard died Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Howard. Leo Theodore Kommes was born November 12, 1935 on a farmstead in Miner County, South Dakota, south of Howard, to Matthew and Sarah (Esser) Kommes. Leo was raised in the area, attending and graduating from St. Agatha High School in 1953. He worked on the farm for a short while before enlisting into the U.S. Army in 1960. After serving and receiving his Honorable discharged, he returned to the farm, where he farmed with his father before taking over the farming operation. On September 21, 1984 he was united in marriage to Jeannette (Jager) Abrahamson at Howard. The couple farmed together with his step-son: David Abrahamson. Leo was involved on the Township broad and Cenex CO-OP Board. He retired and moved into Howard in 2008. Leo enjoyed riding horses and would help area farmers in rounding up and moving cattle for them. One of his favorite hobbies was making solid steel sculptures. One of his great sense and pride of entertainment was watching and playing with his grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Merle and Allen. Those grateful for having shared in his life include: Jeannette Kommes of Howard, SD; a step son: David (Teresa) Abrahamson of Howard, SD; a step-daughter: Debbie (Alen) Henricks of Watertown, SD; eight grandchildren: Scott Henricks, Mark Henricks, Kristine Henricks, Jennifer Henricks all of Watertown, SD; Kaitlyn Abrahamson; Joseph Abrahamson both of Howard, SD; Kelli Gustaf Jensen; Erianne Gustaf both of Seattle, WA; a great granddaughter: Eleanor Jensen; a brother: Ralph (Sharon) Kommes of Arlington, SD; two sisters: Mary Ann Olson of Nunda, SD and Katherine (Laverne) Kothe of Fedora, SD.
