Ralph Koch

Ralph Koch, 85, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014, at Avera McKennan Hospital.

Ralph R. Koch, son of Ralph and Agnes (Janda) Koch, was born on November 1, 1928, in Omaha, NE. After graduating from Wahoo High School in 1946, Ralph attended the University of Nebraska, majoring in Architecture.

Ralph was united in marriage with Jane Goeres on December 27, 1950, in Sioux Falls, SD. Ralph enlisted with the Unites States Army and served during the Korean War. Upon being honorably discharged, the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Ralph worked for Hugil, Blatherwick, Fritzel, Kroeger Architects until 1957, and then with Howard Parezo. In 1961, Ralph founded his own firm and later partnered with Bob Hazard to become Koch Hazard Architecture, which celebrated 50 years in business in 2012. Ralph retired in 1992. Ralph was a well-respected architect that thoroughly enjoyed his work. He had a passion for designing and building, a love that carried into his personal life. He would often build items for his family and friends such as shelves, rocking horses, bird feeders, and picnic tables. He took great pride in designing the Karl Mundt Library which was dedicated by the President of the United States.

Ralph was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church and sang in the choir. In the past, Ralph was the former President of St. Michael Cemetery and Sioux Vocational School (Achieve) and the Sioux Falls Cosmopolitan Club. He was also on the Board of Directors with the South Dakota Symphony, and the Great Plains Zoo. Currently, Ralph was active in the South Dakota chapter of the American Institute of Architects (past President) the National School Board AIA, Sioux Falls Elks Lodge (BPOE), (past Exalted Ruler), 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and the American Legion.

When time permitted, Ralph enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing and playing cards. He was a dedicated Nebraska Cornhusker.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Jane Koch, Sioux Falls, SD; children Sherrie (Tom) Manning, Lincoln, NE, Dr. Dick (Cindy) Koch, Sioux Falls, SD, Barb Rydell, Littleton, CO; brother Joe Koch, San Antonio, TX; 6 Grandchildren, Stacey (Todd) Sands, Brian (Kristin) Manning, Ben Koch, Lisa Koch, Colin Rydell, Meghan Rydell (fiancé Devin King); 3 Great Grandchildren, Riley Jane, Addie, Hudson; and many other relatives and friends.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents.

The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Michael Cemetery, O'Gorman High School, or a .

Visitation will begin at 1 pm with the family present from 5 to 7 pm and a wake service beginning at 7 pm on Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at Miller Funeral Home, 13th & Main. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at St. Mary Church with burial at St. Michael Cemetery.
