Walter R. Nickel, 81 of Columbia passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Services will be held at 11 am, Monday, March 11, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am, Monday at the church. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall, MO.
Walter was born January 26, 1932 in South St. Paul, MN to Walter F. and Elizabeth Rosenberg Nickel. He married Freta Dick on July 19, 1957 and she preceded him in death. Walter earned a BA and a MA degree from the University of Minnesota. He attended the Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, KS. He was a preacher in Kansas and Nebraska, and later became Interim Pastor for many years in churches in South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. For many years he was a Professor of Philosophy at Sioux Falls College, as well as the debate coach. Walt's eloquent oratory was surpassed only by his open-minded, brilliant thinking, as he looked for answers, but much more so to clarify the questions. He encouraged others to seek truth by framing big ideas in ways that made them accessible, but no less awesome. Walt continued to share his gifts by teaching Sunday School at Calvary Baptist Church for the last several years.
Survivors include: two daughters, Carol Nickel and Karen Nickel and husband John Blaylock of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Memorials may be given to Calvary Baptist Church. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.parkerfuneralservice.com
