Wilbur J. "Bill" Heimerman, 97, died on May 8, 2013 at Avera McKennen Hospital.
Bill was born on February 7, 1916, in Stacyville, Iowa where he graduated from Visitation High School in 1934. He worked as a bank teller in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for several years until he was drafted into the Army in the very first call-up before World War II began. Bill had already served nine months of his twelve month term when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, extending his term to the duration of the war - a total of six years. He served in both the Pacific and European theaters and earned a Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge. He met his wife, Marjorie Laliberte, at a USO dance near Fort Lewis, Washington in 1942 and they married May 6, 1944 in Evansville, Indiana.
After the war, he served as a bank examiner for the US Treasury Department, transferring to Sioux Falls in the late 1940's. Several years later he accepted a position with Northwest Security National Bank (now Wells Fargo). Bill graduated from the Executive Banking Program at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and became a senior executive at the bank with responsibilities in the investment and commercial credit areas as well as the Trust Department. He also served on credit, investment, and real estate committees with the Minneapolis bank's owner. He retired in March of 1982 after 34 years with the bank.
Throughout his career, he served the Sioux Falls community as a member of various boards and committees. These included the Boards of McKennan Hospital, O'Gorman Foundation, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Elks, and Knights of Columbus.
In his leisure, Bill enjoyed socializing with friends, golfing, traveling, and keeping up with current political and economic events.
When we think of Dad, we think of a strong, confident man who was comfortable being in charge. He was resilient in the face of adversity with a relentless determination, which in his later years he applied toward getting his driver's license back. Underlying everything was his strong faith in God.
Bill is survived by his three children: Kent lives in Sioux Falls, Beth (Jerry) Arntzen resides in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, and Jon (Karen McKeon) lives in Alexandria, Virginia. He also leaves behind grandchildren Erik Arntzen, Jennifer Picciano, and Casey and Jack Heimerman, and great grandchildren Elizabeth and Charlotte Arntzen and Cecily and Shayla Picciano. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Marjorie, brothers Father Francis Heimerman and Matt Heimerman, and sister Rita Alley.
