OLSON, Carroll CARROLL OLSON Carroll Olson was born on a farm in north central North Dakota to Ida (Nord) Olson and Ole J. Olson on February 18, 1930. He attended a small rural grammar school and graduated from high school in Cando, ND, in 1948. He earned a BA from the University of North Dakota and an MBA from Michigan State University. While at MSU, Carroll met and later married Dorothy Pitts of Atlanta in 1964. Carroll served 21 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1973 as Lt. Colonel. During his career, he was stationed in England, Japan, the Pentagon, Vietnam, and finally Spain, where he served as Comptroller, Torrejon AFB. While at the Pentagon, he served as Military Secretary to the Office of Strategic Mobility, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Following his military career, Carroll and his family moved to Atlanta. From 1973 to 1996, he worked for MARTA, beginning as a senior accountant and retiring as the Assistant General Manager for Finance. During his tenure, he acted as MARTA's Coordinator for UMTA for federal funding of rapid rail development and other capital projects. After retirement Carroll enjoyed gardening, golf and time with family. He was a former president of the Greater Atlanta Rose Society and a member of DeKalb County's Master Gardeners Association. Carroll was an active member of the Briarcliff United Methodist Church, serving on the Finance Committee. He also served for several years as a board member of the Sagamore Hills Civic Association. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Dorothy Pitts Olson, daughter Dr. Kelli Olson and her husband David Litherland of Charlottesville, VA and daughter Leslie Whitten and her husband Craig Whitten of Norcross; and grandchildren William Olson-Litherland, and Rachel, Matthew and Peter Whitten. His sister Betty Besse currently lives in Meza, Arizona. He was predeceased by his brother Jon Olson and sister Viola Broderick. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Briarcliff United Methodist Church, 4105 Briarcliff Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30345. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7-9 PM at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill on Thursday at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Lisa Derrick and Dr. Sidney A. Gates officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors at Locust Grove City Cemetery.
