Charles French Obituary
FRENCH, Charles Charles Augustus French, age 98, of Fairfield, IL. passed away on Monday, May 5th at 1:57 at Enbracing Hospice in Cumming, Georgia. Many of his earlier years were spent in Mill Shoals, IL. At his passing, Mr. French was residing in Alpharetta, Georgia, near his daughter and son-in-law, Anna French Lee and Robert Lee. Mr. French was a graduate of the University of Illinois where he earned a degree in Business and Finance. He would later attend law school at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. During his life, with family members, Mr. French was a farmer and grain elevator dealer with locations in Mill Shoals, Golden Gate, Springerton and Enfield, IL. He served on the original board of directors and was later president of The Wayne County Bank. During War World Two, he was a Captain in the United States Army where, in addition to other duties, he served as an aide to Brigadier General W. A. Danielson. One of his most lasting memories was listening to Sir Winston Churchill address his unit while studying Advanced Technical Training in Business Administration at Harvard University in 1943. In 2012 at age 96, Charles, along with several other veterans, experienced a long time dream of traveling to Washington D.C. on Honor Air Flight to see the World War II Museum that was completed in 2004. Charles had the designation of being the oldest veteran on the flight. The trip was sponsored and paid for by the Roswell, Georgia, Rotary Club. Over Mr. French's long life he served his community in multiple ways, some of which follows. Member of the Mill Shoals United Methodist Church and The First United Methodist Church of Fairfield, member of the Republican Party, life time member of the Mill Shoals Ruritan Club and the last surviving member, 32nd degree Mason with 50 year pin, chairman of the Wayne County Soil Conservation District, member of the Joint Illinois/Indiana Wabash Interstate Commission which promoted economic growth, Elks Club, Rotary Club, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award, president of Mills Prairie High School Board of Education for many years, and task force member for Senator Evert Dirksen. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 10th, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church in Fairfield. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, May 9th, 2014, from 5:00P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Nale's Funeral Home in Fairfield, IL. Immediately following interment The Mill Shoals Ruritan is hosting a luncheon for family and friends. Mr. French was born October 4, 1915, in Golden Gate, Illinois, to Herschel and Anna Holt French. He was married to the late Wanda Chandler French. Survivors include three daughters: Anna French Lee and husband, Robert, of Alpharetta, Georgia; Judy French Harvey of Lexington, KY; Jayne French Dubinsky of Boca Raton, FL. Grandchildren: Sara Lee Sharp, of Atlanta, GA; Chandler Mahal of Dublin, CA; England Dubinsky of Boca Raton, FL; Lane Harvey of Murfreesboro, TN, Laura Harvey Triplett and John Harvey, of Lexington, KY; Great Grandchildren: Annafrench, Charles and James Sharp all of Atlanta, GA; A.J. and Mohan Mahal of Dublin, CA; Caroline and Scarlett Triplett of Lexington KY; Cal and Mac Harvey of Lexington KY; Evan Harvey of Murfreesboro, TN; Sofia Lee of Santiago, Chile.
