Charlotte Milford Obituary
MILFORD, Charlotte CHARLOTTE MILFORD Mrs. Charlotte Mills Milford transitioned April 28, 2014. She was 91 years old. She was always active and known for maintaining a vigorous schedule until shortly before her death. Charlotte was a devoted member of First Baptist Church and the Evangeline Sunday School Class, and the "Wee Four No More" coffee club. An avid bridge player, she enjoyed being a member of several clubs through the years. Also, she was a charter member of The Hartwell Women's Club as well as The Hartwell Garden Club. In addition, she served as an officer in almost every civic club in the area, as well as medical auxiliary clubs locally and statewide. Born on August 13, 1922 and raised in Rhode Island by her parents, James H. and Charlotte Mills, she enjoyed a wonderful New England childhood with her late sister, Honey Mills Morford and her brother James H. Mills, Jr. She graduated from the Lockwood Academy for Girls and attended the University of Rhode Island. Charlotte loved music and studied piano and marimba throughout her school years. With her beauty and talent she won the 1942 "Radio Queen of the South" contest in Miami, Florida and Havana Cuba. She also hosted her own radio show and appeared throughout the northeast and south. During her junior year of college her parents relocated to Augusta, GA. On her first visit she met Dr. J. Hubert Milford on a blind date and transferred to the University of Georgia. They married in 1943. Upon completion of Dr. Milford's medical residency they moved to his hometown of Hartwell. Charlotte immediately loved Hartwell and formed many lifelong devoted friendships. She was a terrific mother to two sons James H. Milford, Jr. and the late Jon David Milford. After the death of Dr. Milford, she started Charlotte Milford Realty in 1975. She developed Melody Farms in 1985 and was CEO of Milford Properties, Inc. In 2012, she was honored by the Georgia Board of Realtors and, at the annual Hart County GA Chamber of Commerce banquet, was presented "The Lifetime Achievement Award" for 38 years of dedication, excellence, and great commitment to the community. No matter what she put her mind to, she succeeded. She was always positive and said she was inspired by the world around her. In truth, she inspired the world she knew. Her upbeat attitude was infections and contributed to her beauty. But, best about Charlotte, was her love of life. Anyone who ever met her will never forget her. She was a "Class Act" and will be greatly missed. In addition to her son Jimmy, Charlotte Milford is survived by grandson Jon David Milford, Jr. his wife Caroline, granddaughters, Jamie and Katie, their mother Cindy and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves her brother Jimmy Mills and sister-in-law Evelyn, a niece and three nephews. A celebration of her life service will be held Thursday, May 8 at 4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Hartwell with Rev. Carter Tucker officiating. Musicians will be Ms. Lynn Glasco, Ms. Julia Mansfield, and Rev. Allen Stewart. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Charlotte's memory to the Hospice of the Upstate, Inc. 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson SC 29621. www.hospicehouse.net. The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements. On-line condolences can be sent to the family at www.stricklandfh.com.
