KUNKLER, David David "Dave" Lee Kunkler, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday April 23, 2014. He was born July 27, 1930 to the late Donald and Mariam Kunkler in Marion, Ohio. Dave had three brothers and a sister. At the Age of 12, he moved from Marion, Ohio to Virginia Beach, Virginia. After high school, Dave attended the Virginia Polytechnic Institute for one year before joining the United States Army where he became a Master Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne. While in the Army, he married Katherine Long "Kitty". After four years in the Army, he attended the Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina on a full football scholarship. Dave played Quarterback and Line Backer, and was the team captain and achieved the Most Valuable Player award. After graduating with honors with a degree in Accounting, Dave was accepted at Harvard and the University of Virginia, but decided to attend the University of Florida on full academic scholarship to pursue his Masters in Accounting. After graduating with honors from the University of Florida, Dave's thesis was published and had a nationwide impact on Accounting Practices. Dave worked for Arthur Anderson, Accounting Firm in Atlanta, Georgia and was the youngest CPA to make partner at the firm. He left the firm and started his own firm which later merged with Siedman & Siedman, where he became managing partner for the Eastern United States and Europe. Dave left Siedman & Siedman to become the Chief Financial Officer of Regal Textiles in Greenville, South Carolina. Nearing retirement, Dave accepted the position of Assistant Director of the FDIC under Bill Siedman. He later became a Financial Consultant throughout the Southeast from which he retired. Dave's friends and families referred to him as "Super Chief." He was a great artist and wood worker. He loved playing golf, winning the Atlanta Pro-Am in 1969 and even invented his own putter design. Dave was a long time member of Peachtree Golf Club and Cherokee Country Club. Funeral services were held on Friday, April 25, 2014 in Madison, Georgia. He was laid to rest next to his beloved wife of 50 years, Kitty. He is survived by his three sons; David Kunkler of Atlanta; Jeff Kunkler of Carrollton, Ga; and Chris Kunkler of-Atlanta; and four grandchildren, Jessica Wright- Moore, Marla Shadrix, Griffin Kunkler, and Carly Kunkler; and four great grandchildren, Lyla Wright-Moore, Grady Wright-Moore, Reese Shadrix, and Rett Shadrix. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor.
