Family-Placed Death Notice

DAVES, Donald DONALD BUCHANAN DAVES Donald Buchanan Daves, 87 years old of John's Creek, GA passed away on September 28, 2013 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease. He was born February 5, 1926 in Howell, TN to Mary Elizabeth Moore Daves and James Herman Daves. He graduated from Morgan Prep School in Petersburg, TN in 1944. After graduation, he immediately entered the Navy and served two years in World War II. After returning from the War he entered Vanderbilt University in Nashville TN. In 1948 he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Civil Engineering. For 40 years he was employed by Southern Bell and retired in 1989 after reaching the position of Vice President of Marketing for the state of Georgia. He was highly respected by his employers and fellow employees. He was a wonderful husband, father, mentor and friend. During his life, Don worked on many boards and associations. He was a great leader. He was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Association and enjoyed his golf and golfing buddies! He was president of NAMI Georgia and worked to alleviate the stigma of mental illness. In 1949 he married Susan Seay Daves. They were married for 52 years before she died in 2002. After Susan's death, in 2003, Don married Ruth Tabb of Atlanta, GA formally of Petersburg, TN. They were married for almost 10 years, and Don's children and grandchildren were so thankful to her for the loving and caring spirit she exhibited for their father. Don is survived by his daughters, Nancy Daves of Silver Spring, MD, Alison Daves Stokes of Birmingham, AL and Patricia Daves Cone of Atlanta, GA. His son, Donald B. Daves, Jr. died in 2010. Don is also survived by his grandchildren, Donald B. Daves, III (Brock), Leann Stokes Lusco (Alex), Matthew Wesley Cone, and Christopher David Stokes. There will be a Celebration of Life Service on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10AM at Dunwoody United Methodist Church in Dunwoody, GA. A visitation will follow the service in the parlor. The family would like to express their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice of Atlanta, GA for their excellent care and love during Don's battle with Alzheimer's. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in memory of Donald B. Daves to be made to Gentiva Hospice of Atlanta, (3101 Tower Creek Parkway, Suite 225, Atlanta, GA 30336).
