Dozier Copeland CADE Obituary
CADE, Dozier Copeland Dozier Copeland Cade, 96, passed away in his sleep at Southerland Place in Brentwood, TN on April 12, 2014. He was born in Eufaula, AL on Sept. 8, 1917, son of the late Dozier and Love Ellis Cade. He was one of five children. After graduating from Eufaula High School, he received an AB degree in Journalism and English from the University of Alabama in 1939 with highest honors, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and other honor societies. Later he received an MS in Journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL and a PhD in Mass Communications from the University of Iowa. He was called to active duty in the Army in 1940 and served with the Office of Strategic Services in the China-Burma-India theater and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorius Service. He retired in 1969 as a Colonel with 30 years of service in the Army and Army Reserve. He was married in Atlanta on Jan. 29, 1949 to Catherine Tomlinson (Kay) Woodman of Atlanta, who passed away in 2013. He is survived by two sons, Dozier Woodman Cade (Sandy O'Donnell) of Nashville, TN and Dr. James E. Cade (Barbara) of Murfreesboro, TN, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He worked in newspapers for ten years and for 30 years as a journalism professor at Emory University, Northwestern University, Georgia State University and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he was Director of the School of Journalism. He and Kay retired to Hilton Head, SC in 1980 and lived there until their move to Nashville in 2011. They loved living on the island and were active in the community for many years. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. at Hillsboro Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN on May 9, 2014. A service will be held at a later date at First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head, SC where Dozier and Kay Cade's ashes will be interred in the Columbarium.
