Family-Placed Death Notice
SMITH, E. Larry E. LARRY SMITH Wonderful husband, devoted father, proud and caring grandfather (Grandy) and great grandfather died on May 4, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Paul McDonald Smith, Jr., two sisters, Carolyn Smith and Josephine Smith Caldwell. He was born in Griffin, Ga. On December 4, 1928 to Effie and Paul McDonald Smith. He moved to Atlanta and graduated from Boys High School. He attended the University of Georgia where he was member of Phi Delta Theta and graduated from Emory University. He married Virginia Anne (Gini) Tatum in 1951 and began a long, devoted married life of 62 years. With his enthusiasm for life and love of people he was a natural salesman. First, with Scott Paper Company, then with Andrew Jergens Company and in 1957 he established his own insurance agency (Larry Smith Agency) where he won numerous awards of excellence and enjoyed a successful career that spanned over four decades. His Christian faith was evident to everyone who entered his office and to all who knew him. Larry was a longtime active member of Sandy Springs Methodist Church where he served in many capacities of his church and the Joy Sunday School Class. He loved exercise and jogging with the "YMCA Y's and Shiners", racquetball, tennis, sailing, traveling with his wife, and spending time with family and friends. As a faithful and loyal member of the Kiwanis Club for 44 years, he was a founding charter member of the Executive Park Kiwanis as well as the Uptown Atlanta Kiwanis. He attended the Kiwanis Club of Buckhead until his health did not permit him to continue. He is survived by his wife, Gini, daughters; Elaine Bailey, her husband David of Atlanta, Pamela Smith of Decatur, and son; Larry, Jr., his wife, Julie of St. Louis; nine grandchildren; Meredith Bailey Simmons (McKittrick), Julia Bailey Carter (Evan), Grant Bailey, Taylor Smith, Carolyn Smith, Carter Smith, Andrew Smith, Allison Smith, and Colleen Smith; three great grandchildren; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 7, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at H. M. Patterson Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., Sandy Springs. The funeral will be held Wednesday, May 8, at 11:00 am at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made "in memory of Larry Smith" to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Georgia Chapter, 1117 Perimeter Center West, Suite E101, Atlanta, GA, 30338, for research of primary progressive M.S., or they may be made to Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
