Family-Placed Death Notice

BURKE, Edmund Edmund Barton (Peter) Burke, age 64, died at his home in Hartwell, Georgia, on Sunday, October 13, 2013. Born in Coral Gables, Florida, Mr. Burke spent most of his life in Atlanta, Georgia. He was an ambitious scholar graduating from Northside High School in Atlanta, and then from Vanderbilt University, cum laude. He was Vice President of his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. Mr. Burke earned a Juris Doctor degree with distinction from Emory University School of Law where he was elected to Order of the Coif. Recognizing the future of computer systems, he attended Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a M.S. in Information and Computer Science in 1986. Mr. Burke had a notable career as a lawyer in Atlanta for over 25 years. Most recently, he became a sole practitioner in Atlanta and Hartwell, Georgia. During his career he practiced with Altman Kritzer & Levick as the Chair of the Technology Practice Group, at Powell Goldstein & Murphy as a partner and at Sutherland Asbill and Brennan, as special counsel for intellectual property. He also served as corporate counsel at Digital Communications Associates, Inc. and as an adjunct professor at Georgia Institute of Technology. Mr. Burke was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund H. and Edna Lamb Burke. His survivors include one cousin, Peggy Mabry Kolinsky of Knoxville, Tennessee and his beloved former wife and closest friend, Lynne Morris Burke of Hartwell, Georgia. Pete, as he was known by all, was an avid bridge player and trivia buff: he constantly pursued studies in varied subjects as he sought to satisfy his insatiable intellect. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 1:00pm at The Way Church, 1332 Airline-Goldmine Road, Canon, Georgia 30520. A reception will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Way Church, PO Box 1250, Hartwell, Georgia, G.O.O.D. Campaign or the Joyful Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church of Hartwell, 200 E. Howell Street, Hartwell, Georgia 30643. The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements. On-line condolences can be sent to the family at www.stricklandfh.com.
