Family-Placed Death Notice

LaPORTA, Edward EDWARD LAPORTA Edward LaPorta, age 96 of Smyrna, GA, passed away Sunday October 20, 2013. Born in Italy on June 21, 1917 and came to America when he was about 17 years old. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October, 1940 in Los Angeles, CA. He received his basic training at Ft. Knox, KY when the 1st Armored Division was being formed. His assignment was heavy vehicle driver including tanks, half tracks, tractors and other carriers. He was sent to England and later to the invasion of Africa at Oran. After fighting in many battles, he and a small group of soldiers were sent on a recon-mission into North Africa where they were completely surrounded at the Kasserine Pass by German tanks and captured. This was in February of 1943 and he held the rank of T/4. Because he would not give any information to the Germans; other than name, rank and service number, he was beaten and sent to a slave labor camp in Italy for 6 months. After that he was sent to Stalag 3-B in Furstenberg, Germany where he spent 17 months. He was then marched 85 miles to Stalag 2-B in Bugenwald, Germany where he spent 4 months until liberated in May of 1945. Among the medals and awards he received were the Purple Heart, European-African, Middle Eastern, Normandy/Northern France, Tunisia and Central Europe, as well as expert in pistol and rifle. After the war he married a beautiful girl, Theresa Sessa in 1947. She was wonderful in helping him rehabilitate from the ordeals of the war. He is survived by a son, Edward LaPorta, sister, Rita LaPorta, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Theresa LaPorta, daughter-in-law Delphine LaPorta and 2 brothers, Leonard and Joey LaPorta. The family will receive friends at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Home on Saturday October 26, 2013 from 11am until 1:00pm. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, October 26, 2013 in the Chapel of Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home at 1:00 pm with interment to follow in Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors.
