Family-Placed Death Notice
BRISCOE, F. Woodson F. WOODSON "WOODY" BRISCOE F. Woodson "Woody" Briscoe, 80, died peacefully June 5 after suffering a stroke May 22. He was born March 9, 1932 in Atlanta to Lillian and Jack Briscoe. He attended North Fulton High School and graduated from Gordon Military Academy. He graduated from Gordon College and attended The University of Georgia, where he became a devoted, lifelong Bulldog fan. Woody served in Germany as 1st Lieutenant, 101st Airborne, US Army. Following his military service, he returned to Atlanta and worked at Retail Credit Company (now Equifax) before beginning a six-decade career in the automobile business. In 1965 Woody and his father Jack founded Leasing International, the first vehicle leasing company in the Southeast. During the next 14 years they built the business into a national presence, taking it public in 1972. In 1979 Leasing International was acquired by GELCO. Woody continued as President SE Region until 1985, when he left to found Major Leasing, building another successful company with accounts in 48 states. An attempt at retirement proved fruitless as Woody missed working too much, and in 1995 he founded yet another business, Cartersville-based Major Auto Sales, which he operated with its financing partner MB Financial until his illness. Woody became passionate about the sport of running after suffering a major heart attack in 1994. He ran his first Peachtree Road Race in 2001 and was training for his 12th Peachtree this year. He achieved a personal goal in 2009 when he ran the Peachtree with his four grandchildren. He also completed two half-marathons. Woody was a lifelong member of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, where he was past president of the EEE Sunday School class. He was past president of CATRALA, SME-A, and the Buckhead Business Association; and past board member of SME-I, NVLA, Northside Kiwanis, and The Buckhead Coalition. He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Barbara Palmer Briscoe; daughter Cynthia Briscoe Brown, her husband James F. (Jim) Brown, Jr. and their children Caroline and Palmer, of Atlanta; daughter Laura Briscoe Carey and her children Erin and Emily, of Lancaster, PA; sister Rev. Glenda Hope of San Francisco, CA; sister Bonnie Hayes and husband Denny of Manchester, GA; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son Scott Alan Briscoe; father Jack Lamar Briscoe; and mother Mae Lillian Briscoe. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10 in Swilley Chapel of Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Rev. Ann Gibert officiating, with visitation in the church parlor beginning at 1:30 p.m. A private, family interment will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to EEE Helping Hand Fund, Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, 2715 Peachtree Rd., Atlanta, GA 30305; Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr., Atlanta, GA 30319; or San Francisco Network Ministries, 559 Ellis St., San Francisco, CA 94109.
