Family-Placed Death Notice
MEEK, Frances Frances Varner Meek, age 95 of Woodbury Ga., passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013, at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Woodbury United Methodist Church, with interment following in the Woodbury City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 until 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, October 11, at Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home in Woodbury. Mrs. Meek was born August 2, 1918 in White, Ga., the daughter of Jesse Lee Varner and Ione Lee Jones Varner. She attended LaGrange College and later while attending business college, met and married her late husband William E. "Bill" Meek. In 1963 she and her husband moved their family from Marietta to Woodbury, where he worked as assistant manager and later plant manager of Nabisco. Before and after this time, Mrs. Meek participated in numerous civic activities. While living in Marietta she was a member of the Marietta Garden Club and the Town and Country Junior Woman's Club, where she had served as President. In 1962 she was named Cobb County Homemaker, and as representative of her district, competed at the state level for Georgia Homemaker of the Year. Among her many talents, she enjoyed photography, writing, poetry, and took great pride in her flower gardening. She attended various writers conventions and was noted statewide for her award winning work as a poet. For a number of years she was a reporter, photographer, and regular columnist for the Manchester Star-Mercury newspaper, and also had worked as a teachers aid at Greenville High School. She was a member of Woodbury United Methodist Church where through the years she had served the church diligently on various committees. She was a member of the choir, was a former teacher of the Young Adults Sunday School Class, the Clements Sunday School Class, and had been responsible for arranging and printing the weekly church bulletin and newsletter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, William E. "Bill' Meek; a sister Evelyn Louise Varner Carson; and three brothers, James Lowell Varner, Paul Jones Varner, and Roy Palmer Varner. Survivors include her daughter, Judith Meek Lowe of Woodbury; a son, Thomas E. Meek and his wife Polly of Stockbridge, Ga.; five grandchildren, Thomas Glenn Hall and his wife Jennifer of Washington, Ga., Cynthia Paige Hall Yarbrough and her husband Lindsey of Lyons, Ga., Tracie R. Fayard and her husband Herlon of McDonough, Ga., Teresa S. Hill and her husband Ricky of Stockbridge, Ga., and Grady McQuade and his wife Sarah of Atlanta, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; also a number of nieces and nephews.
