Obituary Condolences

BRANDT, Harry Harry Brandt, 89, formerly of Atlanta, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 7 at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN after a long illness with his daughter by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years, Frances Marilyn Brandt, in March, 2013. Harry was born on April 13, 1925 in Dresden, Germany, the only child of George and Margarethe (Hamburger) Brandt. He emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1938 and attended public school in New York City. He was drafted into the Army and served in the 341st Infantry, becoming an American citizen at about the same time. Harry served in the European and the Pacific Theaters as map reader and translator. After the war, the Brandt family moved to Seattle, where Harry attended the University of Washington. He then attended graduate school at Columbia University, where he received a Ph.D. in Economics in 1954. He married the former Frances Jacobson on October 29, 1950. They moved to Atlanta in 1954, where Harry was offered a job as a research economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He worked his entire career there, rising to Vice President and Chief Economist. He retired after 36 years of service to the Federal Reserve. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Stephen Brandt, who resides in Nashville, TN with his wife Dr. Rebecca Shattuck Brandt and daughter Hannah, and Dr. Douglas Brandt, who resides in Mystic,CT with his wife Catherine Duym Brandt and daughter Sarah. He also leaves behind one daughter, Sandra Brandt Chambers of Chattanooga, TN. Harry's passions were duplicate bridge, for which he attained the rank of Life Master, gardening, travel, and family. He was a member of The Temple in Atlanta with his family for more than 50 years. An online guestbook is available at www.edressler.com.
