HILL, Harvenia H. Dr. Harvenia H. Hill Dr. Harvenia H. Hill, 78, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and distinguished educator, passed away quietly on Tuesday, May 20, 2014. Harvenia had 38 years of exemplary service in the Atlanta Public School System. She began her career as a seventh grade teacher and after nine years she advanced to serve as principal at the elementary and middle school levels. "Together for Progress" was her administrative theme as she worked with students, staff, parents and community supporters. A native of Atlanta, Harvenia was a product of E.R. Carter Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School, where she graduated salutatorian of her class in 1953. Subsequently she continued her studies at Spelman College, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology in 1957. In recognition of her academic ability, Harvenia was designated a National Science Foundation Fellow, studying Earth Sciences at Wayne State University. Pursuing her passion for knowledge, she advanced her studies earning a Master of Arts Degree in Education from New York University and a Doctor of Education Degree from Nova University. Following the mantra of her dear mother, Mrs. Ruby Hill, Harvenia "Put God first ." She was an active member of Ben Hill United Methodist Church, where she served as Lay Leader, Finance Chairperson, Treasurer, Member of Council on Ministries and United Methodist Women and church school teacher. Harvenia was a dedicated and loyal member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. After retirement she devoted herself to volunteer services, civic and community affairs, most of which involved providing for the needs of others. As such, Harvenia served as a volunteer for the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America as well as other youth-affiliated organizations. Her caring spirit will always be felt among those whose lives she touched. Harvenia was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Harvey Hill, Jr. (Ruby); siblings, Mrs. Emma "Gert" Hill Sprattling, Mr. Harvey Hill, III and Mr. Benjamin Hill, Sr. Left to cherish Harvenia's memory are her devoted husband of 49 years, Mr. Edward Hill, Jr.; loving children, Ms. Melanie Joi Hill, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hill, III (Valerie); precious grandchildren, Sydney and Samuel Hill; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and countless friends. Celebration of Life Saturday, May 24, 2014, 11 am, Ben Hill United Methodist Church, 2099 Fairburn Rd. SW. Instate 10 am. Rev. Byron Thomas, Pastor. Entombment Lincoln Cemetery. Cortege will assemble at Murray Brothers at 10 am on day of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spelman College (Spelman College - Make a Gift), 350 Spelman Lane SW Atlanta, GA 30314-4399. Viewing today 9 am - 9 pm.
