Family-Placed Death Notice

WHITLEY, Hudson HUDSON DIX WHITLEY Hudson Dix Whitley, age 80, died, Wednesday, October 30th after a 7 year battle with lung cancer. Born in Athens, he grew up in Toccoa, Georgia, son of the late Martin and Ella Whitley. He graduated from Toccoa High School and from the University of Georgia with a degree in Business and Finance. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He also graduated from the LSU School of Banking and the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business. After graduation from Georgia he served 2 years as a Lieutenant in the United States Army in Korea. He began his banking career in 1957 with the Citizens and Southern National Bank in Atlanta, Georgia. He served as President of the C & S Bank of Fulton County and Marketing Director of C & S Georgia. While in this capacity he developed the nation's first bank charge card and thus received the National Bank Marketing Association's Golden Coin Award. He became a nationally recognized authority and speaker on retail banking and marketing. He was named the Marketing and Sales Executive of the Year by the American Bankers Association. When C & S Bank purchased Landmark Bank of Florida he was sent to Ft. Lauderdale to direct intergration into the C & S system. He was President of the C & S Bank in Ft. Lauderdale and served as a director of C & S Florida. Hudson was president of numerous civic and charitable organizations and was named "Man of the Year" by the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. After several bank mergers he retired from what is now Bank of America as Senior Executive Vice President. Upon retiring, he and his wife, Delia, moved to Athens where they had lived briefly early in his career. In Athens he served as President of the Athens Sympathy Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Board of The State Botanical Garden of Georgia. He was a member of the Athens Country Club and the Athens City Club. In retirement he enjoyed traveling with family and friends and playing golf but in the last few years he especially enjoyed his friends in the Saturday morning breakfast group, the Wednesday "lunch bunch", the Old Men's Club and the Monday morning Quarterback Club. He survived by his wife, the former Delia Hall, and two children: Hudson D. Whitley, Jr. (Pete) and his wife, Cindy and their children, Charlotte and Lane of Sharpsburg, Georgia and his daughter, Elizabeth Martin Hepp (Marty) and her husband, Joe and their children, Isabel and Julian of Delray Beach, Florida. Also surviving is one brother, James Whitley, of Atlanta and Brunswick. A private graveside service for the family will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at Oconee Hills Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Jon Appleton. It will be followed by a reception for family and friends at the residence, 119 Princeton Mill Road in Athens at 12 noon to celebrate Hudson and a life well lived. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Petros Nikolinakos who was exceptional in his care and concern and to all the staff at Northeast Georgia Cancer Care. They would also like to give special thanks to the Oncology nurses at Athens Regional Hospital for their kindness and care.
