KIRKLAND, Jean Margaret Jean Lowe Kirkland, 78, of Atlanta, passed away on July 21, 2014. Jean was born in Bostwick, GA, on April 24, 1936 to the late Mr. & Mrs. William Herschel Lowe, Sr. An excellent student, Jean graduated valedictorian of the Morgan County High School Class of 1954. Following graduation from the University of Georgia, she began a decade long career as a high school math teacher with the Atlanta School System that included stints at West Fulton High and Dykes High. Following her teaching career, Jean focused her time and energy on her family and community. A beloved and dedicated volunteer, she devoted many hours to Oak Grove Elementary, Lakeside High, and Oak Grove UMC. Above all, she was a fixture at and supporter of any and all activities that involved her children. Once her children were out of the home, she spent several enjoyable years working at ABS Artistic Jewelry, Inc. Jean was an expert in cross-stitching and loved reading and Sudoku. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Eddie Kirkland of Atlanta; son, Ed Kirkland of Atlanta; daughter, Vallie Kirkland of Atlanta; brother, William Herschel Lowe, Jr., of Sumter, SC; brother, Irvin T. Lowe (Joyce) of Bishop, GA; aunt, Ellen Young, of Bostwick, GA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, James George Lowe (Barbara), of Smarr, GA. Funeral services will be held at Oak Grove UMC on Friday, July 25th, at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Louis Miller and Dr. Amy Morgan officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery immediately following the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday evening at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
