Obituary Condolences

ESPOSITO, Joe Joe Esposito, age 71, of Atlanta, Georgia passed away peacefully on Saturday night, March 1, 2014 with his family by his side. Joe was born in Brooklyn, New York October 12, 1942. He moved to Georgia when he won the Borden Agricultural Scholarship to the University of Georgia. He graduated with a Ph.D. in microbiology in 1970. He worked for the Centers of Disease Control for 37 years. During his time at the CDC, Joe became Section Chief of the CDC's Pox Virus Section and director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Smallpox and Other Poxvirus Infections. Throughout his career he was published in numerous scientific journals including Science and Nature and was involved in the Global Smallpox Eradication Program. In 2007 he received the NCPDCID Joseph E. McDade Award for Lifetime Achievement, the CCID James H Nakado Award for Lifetime Achievement, and nomination for the CDC Charles Shepard Award for Lifetime Achievement. Joe was a loving husband to his wife, Gayle, for 31 years. He was a caring father, brother and son. His love of travel took him around the globe. Joe was an avid racquetball player, biker and runner. His proudest athletic accomplishments were his multiple completions of the Atlanta Half Marathon and the Peachtree Road Race. He was preceded in death by his parents Rose and Vincent Esposito. He is survived by his wife Gayle Esposito, his daughter Laura Woerner and her husband Stephen, his brothers John Esposito, Jim Esposito, and sister Anne Vorrasi. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 12:30 p.m., at Immaculate Heart of Mary, 2885 Briarcliff Rd, NE Atlanta, GA In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.
