BEARD, Jr., John JOHN FRANKLIN BEARD, JR. John Franklin Beard, Jr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the age of 69, in Atlanta. He will be greatly missed by his wife Barbara and a wide circle of life-long friends and family. Born in Moultrie, Georgia on June 13, 1944, John was the son of the late John Franklin and Mary Huber Beard. A graduate of Moultrie High School, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Following active duty with the National Guard, John returned to the University of Georgia and earned a Master's degree in Business Administration and later attended the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in New Jersey. After retirement from a career in commercial real estate and mortgage banking in both Mobile, Alabama and Atlanta, his greatest joy was spending time with his family, which was the focus of his life. John loved being with his granddaughters as often as possible; and he was looking forward to the birth of a grandson this summer. A highlight every year was traveling to the beach with Barbara and their children and grandchildren. John was a die-hard Bulldogs and Braves fan and was very proud that he passed his love for both these teams to his children and grandchildren. In Mobile, John and his family were active members of Government Street Presbyterian Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He also served as a board member of the YMCA and was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Athelstan Club. After returning to Atlanta, John and his wife joined the First Presbyterian Church; and he particularly enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels and attending the Forum at First Sunday School class. John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Byars Beard; his son and daughter-in-law, John Franklin Beard III and Emily Mason Beard of Decatur, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Katharine Beard Hamer and Christopher Martin Hamer of Atlanta; and granddaughters, Elizabeth McLean Hamer and Mason Rose Beard. He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Martha Beard Payne and William Porter Payne of Atlanta; uncle, Anton Huber of Boston, GA; aunts, Marilyn Blasingame Huber of Moultrie, GA, and Barbara Tucker Beard of Dawsonville, GA; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Payne Sikes (David) of Atlanta, William Porter Payne, Jr. (Michelle) of Alpharetta, James Harold Foss, Jr. (Sara) of Port Hueneme, CA, Anne Covington Foss of Washington. D.C., and Sarah Katharine Foss of Gulf Breeze, FL; sisters-in-law, Susan Whitehead Byars of Atlanta and Katharine Byars Knight of Gulf Breeze, FL.; and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 19 at 1:00 P.M. in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John F. Beard, Jr. memorial fund at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA, 30309. Gifts will benefit both the music and children's ministries at FPC. A. S.
