Family-Placed Death Notice

McLANAHAN, John JOHN DUDLEY McLANAHAN Athens John Dudley McLanahan, 74, of Athens, GA died Sunday, October 13, 2013. A native of Elberton, GA, Mr. McLanahan was the son of the late Clarence Rhodes McLanahan and Dorothy Dudley McLanahan. He was an astute counselor and business leader; a blues and jazz enthusiast; an exercise fanatic; and a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. A graduate of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA in 1956, he went on to attend Yale University. While at Yale, he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. After obtaining his undergraduate degree, he received his law degree from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. While serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army, Mr. McLanahan was stationed in Korea. He practiced law for forty years with the firm Troutman Sanders in Atlanta and served as the Chairman of the Board of First American Bank & Trust in Athens, GA. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Athens City Club, Athens Country Club, and the Gridiron Secret Society. Mr. McLanahan is survived by his wife, Penny Drennen McLanahan; his daughters, Maggie McLanahan Staton husband, John Staton and their children John, Hailey and Catherine of Atlanta; Drennen McLanahan Farley husband Brandon Farley, and their children Colin and Banks of Atlanta; and sons, John Dudley McLanahan, Jr. wife, Lynn, and their children Jack, Barrett and Millie of Athens; and C. Rhodes McLanahan, II wife, Temple, and their children William, Davis and Clara of Athens. He is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy McLanahan Watson and husband John of Ponte Vedra, FL; Valerie McLanahan Goetz and husband Charlie of Atlanta; and Catherine McLanahan Nix and husband Ken of Gainesville, GA. Father Robert Salamone will officiate a Memorial Service at 11AM on Wednesday, October 16th at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, with a reception immediately following the service in the Common Room of the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 498 Prince Avenue, Athens, GA 30601 or the Athens YMCA, 915 Hawthorne Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.
