SALINAS, Louis LOUIS SALINAS November 11, 1946 - July 13, 2013 "Louis and his work live on in the many people who he trained, who his work touched, and whose lives he improved, extended and saved." Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, Director, CDC and Administrator, ATSDR For 37 years, Louis worked at every level of the Centers of Disease Control (CDC): as a Public Health Advisor in the field throughout the United States; Program Consultant for the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination; Chief of the Program Coordination Unit, National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention; Principal Liaison to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID); Country Support Coordinator within CDC's Global AIDS Program; Deputy Branch Chief, Associate Director for Management and Operations, and Acting Deputy Division Director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion's Division of Reproductive Health; Deputy Director for the Division of International Health for CDC's Epidemiology Program Office (EPO); and Deputy Director for the Division of Adolescent and School Health within the Chronic Disease Center. In May 2008, was named Deputy Director of the Division of Oral Health, the position from which he retired. Notably, between May 2009 and May 2010, Louis served as the Agency's Acting Chief of Staff at the request of the CDC Director, Dr. Thomas Frieden. His work often took him overseas to such places as Angola, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, where his fluency in Spanish and proficiency in Portuguese and Russian served him well. After his retirement, Louis continued to support the CDC's mission and programs as a project manager with Carter Consulting, Inc. Louis, a native of San Antonio, Texas was a graduate of The University of Texas in Austin. Without fail on Texas Independence Day, he would break out singing with great emotion, the UT fight song, much to the amusement of his colleagues. He also earned his MPA from California State University, Long Beach. Services will be held Tuesday, July 16, at 7:00 pm at St. Marguerite d'Youville Catholic Church, 65 Gloster Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044. A funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, July 17, at 11:00 am with a reception to follow at the church. In addition to his wife, Micaela, Louis is survived by his sons, Bill Salinas and Chris Salinas; his daughter, Anna Salinas Willett; daughter in law, Sheri Salinas; son in law, Robert Willett; five grandchildren, Alexis, Mia, Peyton, Blake and Jordan; and two great grandchildren, Sophia and Trey.
