Family-Placed Death Notice

McGEE, Matilee Matilee Dunn McGee of Atlanta, Georgia passed away peacefully on March 8, 2013. She was born in Warm Springs, Georgia, September 16, 1911 and was preceded in death by her husband, Hassell Elmore McGee. Mrs. McGee received her BS degree from LaGrange College, LaGrange, Georgia. She then received her Masters degree, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Georgia, where she was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She taught Zoology at the University of Georgia during World War II and continued her career teaching in the Atlanta Public School System until her retirement. For many years, she continued to be involved in numerous activities and served on the Board of Directors of Columbus Bank and Trust. Mrs. McGee was a member of the Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlanta. She is survived by two daughters, Lee Herrin and husband Van of Athens, Georgia and Lynn Whetstine and husband Don of Summerville, South Carolina; grandchildren Andrew Herrin and wife Clara of Athens, Georgia; Courtney Cooley and husband Andy of Suwanee, Georgia; Amanda McPherson and husband Kevin of Columbus, Georgia; Melanie Whetstine-Richel and husband Tim of Palouse, Washington; Amy Wilhite and husband Steve of Memphis Tennessee and Jennifer Whetstine of Goose Creek, South Carolina and ten great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be 11:30 am Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Crest Lawn Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Jim Higgins will officiate. The family will receive friends 5-7 pm Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Bernstein. On Line condolences may be made at www.bernsteinfuneralhome.com.
