Ralph JOHNSTON Obituary
JOHNSTON, Ralph Ralph Lewis Johnston, age 87, of Gwinnett County, GA departed this world on July 6, 2014 to be with God. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 11, 2014, with a reception following at Crowell Brothers Funeral Home Peachtree Chapel. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA. Born in Long Branch, NJ on April 5, 1927, he moved to Atlanta (Fort McPherson) the same year when three weeks old and lived with parents; father, John Dennis Johnston and mother, Wilhemina Karl; brothers, Richard Karl, John Randolph and Joe J. Johnston; sister, Herta Hildagard. Later upon retirement of his father, he moved to Atlanta, GA. His father retired as a Master Sargent in the U.S. Army in 1932. His parents and sister and two brothers (John & Richard) preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Maxine Chiles; son, Ralph Brian Johnston; daughter-in-law, Sherry Johnston; granddaughter, Diana Lee Johnston; brother, Joe Johnston; sister-in-law, Jenny Johnston; nephews, Richard and Geofary Johnston; niece, Mary Parker; numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Ralph attended Saint Anthony's Elementary school, Capital View Elementary school and graduated from Hoke Smith Junior high school and Tech high school in Atlanta. He worked at the Charleston Navy Yard during WWII and worked as an instructor in the ATL Boys Club and part time at Sears Roebucks. He attended Georgia Tech and graduated from Georgia State College with a BBA in Management. He served in the State Guard of Georgia, the Georgia National Guard (48th Division), the U.S. Army and served for 33 months on active duty during WWII, which included 18 months in occupied Japan. He enlisted as a Private and took basic training at Fort McClelland, AL. He attended O.C.S. at Fort Benning, GA and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and later after discharge, he rose to the rank of Captain in the Georgia National Guard for a total of 9 years. He was a qualified Paratrooper and Glider Trooper in the 11th Airborne Division. For his service, he received the WWII Victory medal and the American Campaign medal (11th Airborne Division). He worked after discharge in 1948 with the Veterans Administration as a file clerk and as an Engineering Draftsman with the Defense Department. He worked with the FHA and DHUD as an architectural Processor, Assistant Chief Architect, Assistant to Chief Underwriter, Director of Operations, Deputy Area Director (Atlanta) and retired as Assistant Regional Administrator. On June 30, 1978, he received the Special Achievement award and upon retirement he went into the Real Estate and Construction business (with his son Brian). He was also a substitute school teacher at Norcross High School. He was appointed as a Planning Commissioner in Gwinnett County, GA and later ran for office as a State Representative (District 81) in Gwinnett County, GA and was elected for three terms, undefeated. He, his wife and son started a business called Lucky Breaks and finally retired after a successful business venture in 2001.
