Family-Placed Death Notice

GROVES, Sara Sara Duke Groves, 97, of Oxford, Georgia, died March 28, 2013. She was born January 1, 1916 in Lamar County, Georgia. Sara graduated from the University of Georgia in 1937 and earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1939. She then joined the staff of Duke University Hospital where she taught Duke medical students. She married the late Col. John Zellar Groves in 1940. Later that year she went to Fort Benning where she worked with General George Patton helping to develop a nutritional program for a potential invasion. She was then recruited by the War Department to work on the top secret Manhattan Project for the development of the Atomic Bomb from 1942 to 1946. As Col. Groves was transferred to new assignments, Sara followed, working under Paul "Bear Bryant" while at Texas A&M University and later as head horticulturist at Georgia Tech. Sara is survived by her sister, Ruth Mitchell and numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces, grandnephews scattered around the world. Sara will be interred beside her husband, John, in Andersonville National Cemetery in southwest Georgia. SouthCare Cremation and Funeral Society in Stockbridge. 770-692-1181
