Family-Placed Death Notice
SPECTOR, Sydney Sydney Spector, age 88, Marietta, passed away October 26, 2012. He was a World War II veteran who participated in the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge as well as four other European campaigns. A preeminent pharmacologist who spent his career conducting research at the Heart, Lung, Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health, Roche Institute for Molecular Biology, and Vanderbilt University Medical School, Dr. Spector made several seminal discoveries including those that led to the development of medications to treat high blood pressure and psychiatric illnesses. He received numerous awards for his research accomplishments including election as the president of the Pharmacology Society. His scientific legacy will live on in the cadre of scientists who trained under his mentorship and have subsequently established their own distinguished careers. In addition to his love of science, Sydney Spector was an avid athlete who cherished his years playing indoor handball at the JCC in West Orange NJ with his "crew" and in his later years prided himself on his extreme workout routine at the faculty center at Vanderbilt and most recently the UNC Wellness Center. Despite poor vision over the past twenty years, he was a prolific artist who loved to paint. His painting adorned the walls of his home and those of his son and daughter. His greatest pride however was his family and his son and daughter's accomplishments in life. He was a devoted husband and father who always made time to attend his kid's school and sporting events, and loved to bring his family along during his world travels. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Bettie Spector; daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Brian Maloney, Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Denise Spector, Chapel Hill, NC and sister, Evelyn May.
