Family-Placed Death Notice
JOINER, Sylbra Mrs. Sylbra Evelyn Smith Joiner, 87, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013, at her home. Mrs. Joiner was born September 26, 1925 in LaGrange, Georgia, son of the late Bob Yancey Smith and Sarah Evelyn Cadenhead Smith. She retired after 47 years of teaching in Georgia Public Schools. She was as passionate about learning as she was about teaching, earning her bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia, a Master's degree from Georgia State University and then a Doctorate of Education from Emory University. She was a resident of Atlanta's Brookhaven Community for more than 57 years, and was a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. Mrs. Joiner's home for the past three years was the Arbor Terrace Assisted Living community in Decatur, where she was a beloved resident. Survivors include Bobby Joiner of Decatur; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kate Brambrut and Marc Brambrut; great-grandchildren Ben Brambrut and Maya Grace Brambrut all of Decatur, brothers, Jack Smith and Raymond Smith of LaGrange, and two nieces and five nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Bob Joiner. Funeral services will be 3:00 Sunday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Whatley and Robin Andrews officiating. Interment will follow in the Talley Family cemetery in the Salem Community of Troup County. The family will receive friends at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, Saturday, from 6 until 8 and at the church on Sunday one hour prior to services.
