Family-Placed Death Notice
DeVOS, Sylvia M. Sylvia M. DeVos, 75, of Johns Creek, Georgia, was lifted to her Lord on March 17, 2013, following a brave and hard fought battle with cancer. She was peaceful and surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Marvin John DeVos, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Lanai; two sons, Todd and Troy; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Paul and Charlotte. The former Sylvia Norwid was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and attended Palm Beach High School. She went on to graduate magna cum laude from the University of Florida's College of Education and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She married her college sweetheart, Marvin DeVos, and returned to Lake Worth to begin her teaching career. It always provided the family a sense of pride, when a former student would recognize her and say thank you. She was a proud member of Chapter EZ of PEO, a women's service society. After emptying her nest, she moved to Atlanta to be near her grandchildren. After nearly 20 years away, she returned to teaching. She chose an opportunity to work with elementary students who face tremendous obstacles in their young lives. In her retirement, she was active in Bible Study Fellowship and the UF Alumni Association of Atlanta. She will be remembered for her cooking, crafting, thoughtfulness for others, and power of positive thinking. She was a true example of the power of prayer and faith, as she handled her illness with unflinching optimism and without complaint. A memorial service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, Upper Room in Johns Creek, Georgia. In lieu of flowers send donations to MP Scholarships, Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, 9820 Nesbit Ferry Road, Johns Creek, GA, 30022. GO GATERS.
