BOWLES, Jr., Thomas THOMAS PAYNE BOWLES, JR. Thomas Payne Bowles, Jr., age 97, died on December 30, 2013. Born in Birmingham, AL on October 12, 1916, he was 17 when his family moved to his father's home in Virginia in 1933. He attended the University of Richmond and was an actuary for the Life Insurance Co. of Virginia. He organized Bowles, Andrews and Towne, a consulting actuarial firm in Richmond in 1948. His family moved to Atlanta in 1954 to open an Atlanta office. In 1970 he was elected president and CEO of Georgia International Life Ins Co. When it merged with Capital Holding in 1972 he became president of Capital Holding. In 1975 he returned to the consulting firm, which became a Towers Perrin Company, from which he retired in 1988. He was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a past president of the Society and of the American Academy of Actuaries. In 1989 The Thomas P. Bowles, Jr. Chair of Actuarial Science was established at Georgia State University. He served four years in the U.S. Army. Drafted in 1942, he graduated as a 2nd Lt. from the anti-aircraft artillery officer candidate school in 1942 and was shipped to England in 1943. He participated in the Normandy Beach air defense planning for the invasion of France, commanded an advanced detachment of anti-aircraft weapons and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and participated in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe campaigns. For his service he was awarded the Bronze Star. He returned to the U.S. as a Major in January 1946. In May 1946 he and Arlene (Pat) Patterson were married in her home in Iowa. They met in Switzerland in August 1945 while Lt. Patterson, a U.S. Army nurse, and Tom were both on R&R leave prior to shipping to the Pacific. Pat joined the U.S Army Nurse Corps immediately after receiving a Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota in 1944. Tom is survived by his wife, Pat, a son Steven and grandson Michael Bowles, Steve's wife Elizabeth and her children Haley and Katherine; a son Kenneth, his wife Cheri and granddaughters Jordan, Megan and Kelsey Bowles; a daughter Kathryn, her husband Samuel and granddaughter Erin Boyd; and two sisters Riva Fromm, and Mary Graham. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Roswell United Methodist Church. Interment will be held, with military honors, in Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Roswell United Methodist Church, 814 Mimosa Boulevard Roswell, GA 30075; or the Mayo Foundation, mayoclinic.org.
