EMBREY, Thomas Lt. Col. Thomas Carl Embrey, USMC, Ret., 92 yrs. old of Alpharetta, Ga. formerly of Vienna, Va. passed away on May 3, 2014. He was born and raised in Washington, D.C. April 8, 1922. He graduated from Eastern High School, Washington, D.C. and was a graduate of George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He was predeceased by two brothers and two infant grandsons, Christopher and Matthew. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 yrs., Betty Jane Moellencamp of Alpharetta, Ga. and four children. Jane A. Deely (Philip) of Suwanee, Ga., Christine L. Beilstein (Frederick) of Roswell, Ga., Thomas Carl Embrey, Jr. (Julie) of Purcellville, Va., Joseph Gregory Embrey (Betsy) of Highlands Ranch, CO. He had 12 grandchildren, Elizabeth Rosser, Jennifer Beilstein, Freddy Beilstein, Kevin Deely, Ann Bolden, Carey Marinelli, Dustin Embrey, Tyler Embrey, Devon Miller, Sara Embrey, Alicia Embrey and Kristen Embrey and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews. LTC Embrey served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-1946 on active duty. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bennington in the Pacific Theater. They carried out the first carrier based bombing strikes on Tokyo and supported the landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He returned to Washington, D.C. to rejoin his family in December, 1945 and was assigned to the inactive Reserve of the U.S. Marine Corps from which he retired in 1962 as a Lt. Col. He began work at the Pentagon for the Department of Defense in 1948 in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, under the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs. In 1953 he transferred to the Administrative Office of the Secretary of Defense. In 1980 he retired as Director of Space Management and Services as a member of the Senior Executive Services. After retiring in 1980 he was named Executive Vice President of the Hoffman Co. His love for the beach led he and his wife to build a home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where they spent many memorable summers with their children and grandchildren while still maintaining their home in Vienna, Va. where they raised their four children. They moved to the Atlanta, Ga. area in 2001 to be close to their daughters. Mr. Embrey was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and remained a devout Catholic throughout his life. A Funeral Mass will be said 11:00 am Friday, May 9, 2014 at Saint Brigid Catholic Church, 3400 Old Alabama Rd, Johns Creek, GA 30022. Interment will be held, with full Military Honors, in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Roswell Funeral Home.
