COVERDELL, Vonis VONIS EVELYN COVERDELL Vonis Evelyn Coverdell, 97, died Tuesday March 4th at the home of her daughter, Patricia Coverdell Trogstad, of natural causes. Mrs. Coverdell was born on August 18, 1916 in Renwick, Iowa to Harry and Clara Wagner. She was the 5th child in a family of 8 children. Vonis started her life's journey in a small town in Iowa, where she and her seven siblings found themselves raising each other after their mother died when the youngest child was born and her father had left the family. The 'Wagner Kids', as everyone called them, were very special, as in pre-depression Iowa, they raised themselves in a shack of a house in Knoxville, Iowa. She was honored to be her High School Representative selected to visit Washington, DC as part of the Honor Society for her outstanding academic accomplishments. On June 11, 1937, she married Eldon Coverdell and shared 57 years of married life with him until he died in 1994. During their marriage, they lived all over the United States, settling in Decatur, Georgia in 1958. It was here that she helped her husband start Coverdell & Company, an insurance business. Mrs. Coverdell was very proud of her son's accomplishments in politics and of her daughter's family values as exhibited in raising 4 children of her own. Vonis had 2 very passionate loves other than her family: The Atlanta Braves and Evans Fine Food Restaurant in Decatur. Her day was not complete unless she enjoyed her breakfast at Evans and later watched the Braves play ball. She was still going to the ballpark at the age of 95 and enjoyed receiving a signed picture from Andruw Jones on her 95th birthday at the ballpark. She was pre-deceased by her husband in 1994, her son, Senator Paul Coverdell in 2000 and 5 brothers and sisters. Mrs. Coverdell is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Terry Trogstad; 4 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and 1 sister. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons on Monday, March 10th at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers, donations to Breast Cancer Research in memory of Vonis Coverdell would be appreciated. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, March 9th from 6 to 8 PM at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, Decatur.
