Albert Anthony Marino, age 86 of Auburn, California passed away on November 10, 2012.
Long time Placer County resident, Al Marino was born on July 11, 1925 in Long Island, New York to Frances Montalto and Salvatore Marino. Al attended local schools in Long Island and graduated from Foresthill High School in 1943. After graduation, he promptly enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three years in the European theatre. His first assignment was to Marseilles, France, attached to the 84th Medical Battalion, 14th Armored Division. Al volunteered as a medic and was distinguished in his subsequent service. He was decorated with two bronze medals and a silver star. When the war ended in 1945, Al moved to California. Al then attended UCLA and graduated with a degree in Environmental Health and Engineering. One year prior to getting his degree he proposed to Dixie Morris. The two were married in 1949. Soon after, Al became the Environmental Health Director in Madera County. He served later in Long Beach in various health assignments before becoming the Environmental Health Director for Placer County, serving in that position for 16 years. During that time Al played a key role in the environmental concerns of the 1960 Olympics. Governor Reagan appointed Al as Executive Officer of the California Waste Management Board. In 1980, Al retired from his state position and used his wealth of experience in his field to consult with many political subdivisions. He held a commission as a U.S. Navy Captain in the Environmental Health Service. Al finally retired at age 77 in 2002 from his lifelong occupation.
Al, lovingly known as "Poppy" by his family, is survived by his loving wife Dixie of 63 years, five children; Chris (Valarie) Marino, Greg (LeeAnne) Marino, Toni (Darryl) King, Juli (Randy) Parnell, Andy (Dixie) Marino, 11 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Poppy will be dearly missed.
A private burial ceremony will be held at Newcastle Cemetery.
A celebration of Al's life will be announced and held at a later date.
