Gordon Frederic Harris
8/10/1931 - 4/2/2013

GORDON FREDERIC HARRIS passed away suddenly on April 2, 2013 surrounded by his family. His loss is felt deeply.
Born the oldest son of Frederic and Anne Harris on August 10, 1931 in San Francisco, Gordon was raised in Watsonville, California and spent many summers with family in Vancouver, Canada. He earned his undergraduate degree from University of California Berkeley and went on to earn his D.D.S. from the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry. On graduation in 1955 he was drafted by the U.S. Army, and proudly served as a dental officer until 1957. After his service, he started a dental practice in Roseville.
On June 28, 1959, he married the love of his life, Mary Ann Dreher, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sacramento. Over the next eight years their children Mark, Karen and Craig joined the family.
Gordon's strong sense of community service involved him in numerous roles through which he inspired, mentored and encouraged many others into giving back. He was the President of the Roseville Chamber of Commerce where, in 1964, his efforts led to Roseville's All-America City Award. He served on the Council at St. John's Lutheran Church for many years. He was a long time active member of the Loomis Lions Club.
His overwhelming generosity and compassion were shown through his unending support of the Sacramento District Dental Society Foundation, an annual scholarship program at Del Oro High School, Child Advocates of Placer County, the Boy Scouts of America, and many other charities.
Throughout his dental career and into retirement, he served for many years on the Boards of The Dental Insurance Company, the California State Dental Society, and the Sacramento District Dental Society and its Foundation. In 2012 alone he screened over 3,500 school children in the "Smiles for Kids" program.
Although he was extraordinarily accomplished in all of his endeavors, what mattered most to Gordon was his family and friends. He loved skiing, hiking, and adventure travel around the globe. An avid Wall Street Journal reader, he always had a quote, a clipping or advice for family and friends taken from the Journal. He never turned down a carrot cake or Boston cream pie, and was not one to miss an opportunity to get ice cream with his grandsons.
Gordon was a loving husband, father and grandfather full of joy, wisdom, and great humor. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann; his children, Mark, Karen and Craig; his daughter-in-law, Annabelle; grandsons, Alex and Adam; and his brother, Allen and sister-in-law, Christie.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church located at 1701 L Street in Sacramento. Parking is available in the church garage with the entrance on K Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gordon's name to the "Sacramento District Dental Society Foundation" or "St. John's Lutheran Church".
