John George Hanron Sr. took his last precious breath on this earth June 14, 2014, surrendering peacefully by his own directive after a 14-year struggle with COPD.
Born July 6, 1938, to Elizabeth Maloof and John W. Hanron in Boston, Mass., John escaped a difficult home life by enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17. During his five years in the Marines, he worked as a newspaper journalist, a trade he continued to ply in the Boston area upon his discharge. His interests turned to advertising and marketing, and John became an established shopping center marketing professional, living and working in and around Boston, Chattanooga, Tenn., Phoenix, Ariz., San Francisco's East Bay and the Sacramento region. John served 10 years as general manager at Sacramento's Florin Mall, until it closed in 2006.
Near the end of his stint in the Marines, John met and later married Esther "Rusty" Wood. Though the marriage lasted only three years, the couple bore two children, Karen Renee and John Jr. 20 years later, John met and later married Cheryl Christie Snow in Mesa, Ariz., and with Cheryl's three children Jamie, Chris, and Kenny they made their home in Mesa, Ariz., then San Francisco's East Bay. Later, the couple moved to Indio, Calif., before settling down in the Sacramento area, Lincoln, and then Roseville, they worked together in real estate, and were married for 30 years until Cheryl's unexpected death in 2010. John continued to work on real estate deals until he died, just before his 76th birthday.
John was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, a group that he credited with helping to save his life 29 years ago. A proud Marine, he was also involved with the local Semper Fi Association, and was active with their Toys for Tots campaign.
John is survived by his brother William K. Hanron (Hope) of Scarborough, Maine, daughter Karen Renee Hanron of Montpelier, Vt., son John George Hanron, Jr., of Seattle, stepdaughter Jamie Snow Monozon (Brian) of San Bruno, stepsons Christopher Douglas Snow of Long Beach, and Kenneth Leigh Snow (Brooke) of La Habra, six grandchildren: Amelia Erin Hanron, and Duncan Gregory Hanron of Seattle, Kia Rae Brynn Hanron of Montpelier, Santana Augustine Snow of Long Beach and Brooke Emma and Andrew Douglas Monozon of San Bruno; friend and companion Diane Nowland and countless other family members, friends, colleagues and business associates.
