Milburn John Benson, a resident of Auburn since 1996 passed away peacefully on December 29, 2012, at the age of 99. Born and raised a Hoosier on April 20, 1913, he pursued many occupations after leaving the farm, survived the Great Depression, was a sailor during World War II, and then became a guard for the Veterans Administration in Washington D. C. After meeting his future wife in West Virginia, he married Gladys Koether in June, 1946. They lived and both worked in the Washington D. C. area for the V. A. Hearing about Southern California from his sister, they both soon transferred West and settled in Santa Monica, California to continue their careers until he retired in 1973. He enjoyed summer vacations to the Texas Gulf, traveling, camping, deep sea fishing, and classic cars. He always had a sparkle in his eye and a cheerful greeting for everyone he met and especially enjoyed celebrating events with his two grandsons, extended family and friends.
He is survived by his son, Raymond and daughter-in-law, Debbie, two grandchildren, Matt and Nico, his niece Judy Hemby and her children, Joe, Mike and Tracy of Carpinteria, California, along with numerous cousins in Indiana and family friends. He will be greatly missed and remembered for his amazing zest for life, strong constitution, his sense of humor, positive outlook, and love for his family.
A celebration of life will be held at the Lasilla Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m., Friday, January 18, 2013. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.
