THOMSON, Ga. - Burton L. Smith, 87, (formerly of Montgomery, NY) passed away peacefully on Monday, August 26th, surrounded by his family. Born in Nashua, Iowa in 1926, he was a graduate of the University of Iowa. Burr was a local businessman and a partner of W. A. Volpe Insurance Company. He was a man that was larger than life, loved the outdoors, and the one people called on when hard work had to be done in the name of righteousness, peace, and humanity. Mr. Smith was proud of his service to his country as a member of Patton's 3rd Army, 6th Armored Division. He also served the families of the Valley Central School District on the Board of Education and Board of BOCES. In addition, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Montgomery. Burr was met in Heaven by his daughter, Betsy Sullivan, his sister, Alyce Rasmussen, and parents William & Hazel Smith. He leaves behind on earth his loving wife of 62 years, Carolyn: his children: Randy Smith (Debbie) of Stafford, VA; Susan Power (Robert) of Malvern, PA; Ellen Knudsen of Thomson, GA and Gainesville, FL; Sarah Cocks (Paul) of Walden, NY; David Smith (Renee) of Gig Harbor, WA; and Catherine Smith of Waxhaw, NC, plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We thank God, for giving him to us for a little while in this world. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Montgomery.
